Developing an idea for a Welsh Celtic Legend series with my friend Geraint Hughes starting with Rhys a Meinir, a tragic love story at Nant Gwrtheyrn on the Llyn Peninsula.
I found a tree that could represent the loss of Meinir who became trapped following the tradition of the "quest" on the morning of their wedding. While not an oak it is symbolic of the splitting of the tree by lightning which revealed her body after Rhys had spent many months looking for his love. I would like to return to this place during a storm for dramatic effect.
Within this tree there was a new life growing from its broken core representing the renewal of life.
There is also an old abandoned farm building which I hope to show as her lost home through the inclusion of a figure passing by who could be Rhys looking or mourning his bride. I need to go back and find a way of developing that idea.
The subdued tones and emphasis only on texture represents isolation for me in this series. While dark there is some glimmer of hope as Rhys searched for his love through a core of colour in each image. The next image is to me symbolic of a timeless eye fused into the fabric of tree, forever looking.
Only to find death.
